It's a long time since I last saw a good, sweet, feel-good movie at the pictures, and I think Love Actually makes an appearance just at the right time, as we have contemplated the recent action hits such asThe Matrix and the epics, such as LOTR and Harry Potter. Love Actually is pretty much based on the same formula of Richard Curtis's other hits, Four Weddings And A Funeral and Notting Hill. The plot focuses on the opening narrative that "Love actually is all around". Ten stories, all loosely interlinked, characterise the different types of love, and the way the characters handle the emotions behind the four letter word. Many would argue that the film is superficial and idealistic. Some have even criticised Curtis's portrayal of London as probably the best place in the world to live if you believed it. However, I do have to counter that. It is a superficial movie, and if you are looking for more realism and dramatism, look elsewhere. Love Actually is that feel-good movie, set at Christmas and has an optimistic outlook in life. Which is something I think we all need right now. As for the performances, though, it was all a bit too fragmented for my liking and many of the parts were irrelevant and didn't add to the film's quality. Indeed, some of the parts were so small, they could be described as extended cameos. There were also some big gaps in revisiting a story, and you never quite felt that they really mastered the tricky editing required. But of the big stars, including Grant, Thompson, Rickman and Firth, they performed to high expectations. Despite all its flaws, I left the cinema feel as I should - that this was a satisfying movie and I would regard it as good. For me, this is one I will watch again.
