Verbal - It's the Blogs

Blog - 17 February 2004

Another mid-week blog, since my life at the weekends seem to be so busy these days. Well, not that I'm complaining at all, as my weekends are now beginning to orbit around one person ;-)

To quote Richard Fish from Ally McBeal, 'First up,' it's an apology. Boothby Graffoe did not appears in any order let alone no particular one last Thursday. Unfortunately I got misinformed by an old page on the BBC website, but I'm sure the tapes are in the cutting room and the recordings will be aired soon. It's funny how old pages can cause so much grief as...

'Move along'

'Next up,' it has been eventful these last few weeks to say the least. And the latest bit of news is of an event where one has to say a farewell. Liana (aka Teddy) returns to HK in exactly a week, and knowing her for four and a half years, she will be another good friend returning to the East. Ah, how the UK is being deserted! :P Anyway, Teddy, I do hope everything goes well for you back home and all the best for the future!

Meanwhile, from one friend about to be flung far to another who far flung a while back. (I like the tenuous link!) Next week is Mardi Gras and I am delighted to be off to New Orleans at the end of the week to join in with some serious partying! And with your best friend as your local guide to the best parades, well it's just gotta be great, right! So, I must thank Jing in advance for the invitation - see you Friday!

Anyway, a trip to N.O. does mean that this site is going on a two week hiatus. If the pain's too much for you, bear in mind I'll be suffering too as I have to miss someone for that long in return. But in the meantime, I so hope everyone has a great time as well whilst I'm away.

So as I accept all your 'bon voyages', have a lovely two weeks. I'll be back soon!

Blog - 11 February 2004

Well, another late, mid-week update. I apologise once again since I have been buried under a model (that is, a very big spreadsheet for the non-analysts) over the last few weeks which I barely escaped from.

Mind you, I did have time to have a little fun away from the office. Last Friday was the last in a series of recordings of Boothby Graffoe in No Particular Order for BBC Radio 4. It was a very enjoyable night, with some great sketches and songs with Boothby's guests, Art Malik, Stephen Frost and Antonio Forcione, who deserves a very special mention for his amazing guitar skills! The first programme is aired this Thursday at 6.30pm.

As for Saturday, it was a little celebration for Liana on her birthday. Incriminating photos there aren't many, but as soon as Peter Wu gets them developed and someone can scan them, I'm sure they'll appear somewhere soon! Anyway, it was a lovely evening (with the small exception of my stereo being nicked from our car) and I'm sure everyone had quite a bit of fun! Anyway, happy 24th my dear.

Well, it's already the middle of the week and the weekend is fast approaching. Time flies by doesn't it! Can't wait for the weekend ;)

Blog - 4 February 2004

Deepest apologies to everyone for not blogging in some time. Unfortunately, life catches up with you sometimes, and it just happened to be that the last two weekends were soaked up by masses of fun whilst the rest of the weeks have been coping with mayhem on the work front.

To summarise though, Happy Chinese New Year and welcome back to London, Peter.

In the meantime, my holiday is fast approaching and I'm looking forward to it. Off to a sunnier skyline at the end of the month as I revisit New Orleans, this time for Mardi Gras. But then, there are plenty more happenings before then, so let's not jump the gun!

Hopefully, I'll have time to write more another time very soon.

Well it's been a good weekend of fun. Despite having missed Lost In Translation and The Last Samurai yet again, I had a tremendous time at the London Boat Show. As well as being able to admire boats of all shapes and sizes, from luxury ones to a tour of a tall ship, I also found out that I couldn't be owning one any time soon! Nonetheless, it's given me an appetite for sailing again, and I'm looking forward to L.E.K.'s second sailing day later in the year.

Other than that, I had a good time on Saturday night down at Opium, a Vietnamese style club on Dean Street. To say it's an eclectic mix of music is an understatement. But it a very nicely decorated place and a very nice little place. Oh and they didn't lose my coat this time ;-) Thanks to Jeanne again for that, and someone called Adrian, whose name we used to blag our way in!

Apart from a weekend painting the town red, it's been a Karena Lam week for me, as I managed to see The Floating Landscape and July Rhapsody on top of last week's re-run of Tiramisu. I must say that Karena is for me one of the biggest rising talents in Hong Kong cinema and I very much hope to see more of her in the future. I shall review them (as part of my growing list of films to add) in due course.

Anyway, as if one new year a year isn't enough, may I wish you a very happy new year yet again. This time the Chinese New Year takes its turn (for the PC of us, it should really be referred as the Lunar New Year), and the Year of the Monkey steps in. I haven't bought my lucky monkey underpands, I'm sorry to say, but I'm sure I'll be lucky even without them.

Anyway, a very happy new year to you all!

George, if you're reading this, welcome to the Mak-Daddy Website™ (as dubbed by George himself). Yes, welcome to my website. Unlike the pseudonym George suggests, this website doesn't carry pictures of anoraks or Apple Macintoshes (although one of the latter does actually churn out the website), nor does it contain any stuff beginning with 'p' and ending in 'orn' (I censor that word merely because I don't my website to be banned by some firewalls :P). Sorry to disappoint my colleagues at work on that front.

Meanwhile, having managed to miss The Last Samurai and Lost In Translation this weekend because we didn't book tickets (sorry Jeanne!), the best I could do this morning was watch Tiramisu featuring Karena Lam and Nic Tse again. Great film, and all I can say is I wouldn't mind Karena making me tiramisu any time ;)

Well, the week ahead looks hectic, so time to chill out for the rest of my Sunday... In the word of The Bangles, it'll be Just Another Manic Monday.

Happy New Year!

Well, I sit here writing this in unusual circumstances. It's dark as as my street has just suffered a power cut. But it seems someone is watching what I'm writing as the power has literally just come back on. Miraculous!

Actually, as I write this paragraph, the miracle undid itself soon afterwards and now there have been now three intermittent power cuts. But that aside, it's been annoying an hour of nothing I can do, but at least it's now not remotely close to the 9pm I was told the power would be restored (it's only just gone 6pm). Saved from boredom!

Anyway, now I got that off my chest, I want to write a tonne of praise to the Trout Inn in Wolvercote, north of Oxford. One of the best kept secrets of Oxford, it is a delightful little pub restaurant situated by Port Meadow and by the river Isis next to a weir. Anyway, the food there is brilliant and after over 2 years away from the place, I returned to it this weekend to realise I'd forgotten how good it is. Anyway, if you like good food, this is the place to go. But do keep it a secret for me :)

Anyway, as with just about everyone, it's back to normality tomorrow at work. So I'll be sweating away again. But I'll try to have fun as always! Have a good week everyone!

Blog - 30 December 2003

Another year has passed and another year arrives. 2003 will be the year I'll be remembering England's World Cup win down-under above all else. 2003 has been a strange year, mostly because so many most unlikely things happened.

It was the year David Blaine decided to dangle 44 days in a perspex box, Derren Brown almost shot himself on TV, and a comedy terrorist failed to humour the Queen. Ah, the live entertainers know how to grab attention, don't they?

In the movies, The Matrix Returns scored a winner and an own goal (you did go and see a dire film, didn't you...) in a year with more sequels in the movie world than you can shake a stick at (but watch out for the sequel stick show), and where a king and a ring returned to take the breaths away from the cinema audience.

2003 was also the year we lost some greats, Bob Monkhouse, Barry White and Leslie Cheung to name but a very few. And the end of the year didn't even stop it, for today Anita Mui, 'the Madonna of Hong Kong' left us. Hong Kong can now claim it really does have both a heavenly king and queen.

All that aside, it's been a enjoyable year I guess, even if personally my own life didn't match the excitement of some of the movies this year. Fortunately, none of the dramas of SARS or the war for meand there was just a quiet year for me. But I'll make up for that next year, mark my words...

2004 is nigh and it's going to be an exciting year, I'm sure. All 2003 leaves me to do is to wish you all a fantastic New Year. And hope the resolutions stay true...

Blog - 21 December 2003

Ah, another week where England win another rugby match and some relaxation from stresses of life.

Also a week where I finally got to see a film I've been waiting for so long, Turn Left Turn Right. I won't write a lot right now on it, as I plan a review soon. But I did get to see a new Gigi Leung film, so that's made my week very bright.

Anyway, I'm all out of imagination right now, so I shall leave it here with my best wishes to everyone for a very happy Christmas and New Year!

Blog - 14 December 2003

Well, another week has passed and I'm having a quiet time ;) I'll keep that quiet from my bosses shall I? Another fairly uneventful week for me, but I have just been roped into the wonderful Friendster website by Amy and others. Now I'm connected to over 90,000 strange people I don't know! Anyway, I'm probably going to test the six degrees of separation soon, so if you're a celebrity then get on Friendster, and let's see if we meet somewhere on the way!

Anyway, I'm going through some photos in my camera and the eclectic collection of recent photographs that don't quite fit into a portfolio. Probably will make a page for them, but as a taster, here's one for current viewing.

Anyway, given I'll probably have another quiet week leading up to Christmas, I guess there'll be a lot for me to do this week. But for now, I'm off to check if I can track down Chelsea Clinton on Friendster (if she's there at all...).
