Holidays and Parties

Well, it has been an interesting week. Ok, much of it was spent watching a few DVDs – in fact one day I watched four in a row: The Irrestistible Piggies, La Brassière, Mighty Baby and Red Corner, but I did get out of the house a couple of times!

* THE FILMS *

Just to tell you about the films, The Irresistible Piggies takes four of Hong Kong’s most beautiful actresses, Michelle Reis, Kelly Lin, Suki Kwan and Karen Mok, and unbeautifies them in their characters. Referred to by everyone under the derogatory term, "the Pork Chops", they aim to get back at their detractors by beautifying themselves and taking revenge. A funny comedy, with Jordan Chan and Karen Mok as the outstanding two performances.

Red Corner stars Richard Gere as a TV magnate, Jack Moore, who is on the brink of a deal in China. Seduced by a model he meets the night before the deal is to go through, he wakes to find himself being arrested by the police for the woman’s murder. He then has to defend himself against the Chinese legal system assisted only by a representative he has never met, Shen Yuelin, played by Bai Ling. This is a good movie, albeit a little far fetched. Not surprisingly, it wouldn’t one of the Chinese government’s favourite movies, with some very controversial content.

La Brassière and Mighty Baby are in fact two films from the same family. La Brassière starts with the challenge for a women’s bra firm led by Carina Lau and Gigi Leung to design the Ultimate Bra, but with the help of two men, played by Lau Ching Wan and Louis Koo. Following their success, they move on to build the ultimate baby product in Mighty Baby. Hilarious and cute comedy, I won’t say more (I’ve reviewed them both in IMDB – La Brassière, Mighty Baby), but they’re both well worth watching!

* RIKKO AND CAMILLE’S PARTY *

Holidays do go pretty well with parties and so when Annie mentioned a party to be held by a couple of my old Buffly friends, it was too good to turn down.

Whilst it is always strange to go back to Oxford as a former student, it is still as familiar as ever. I have been back to Oxford on several occasions, whether it’s the APS events, recruiting for L.E.K. or just seeing friends. But everytime a difference is spotted, it does reaffirm that my student days at Oxford have long gone.

But I still like the taste of it.

Rikko and Camille were two of our core members in our production The Butterfly Lovers in Oxford some three years ago. Actually, not only did Rikko and Camille have key roles off stage as producer/scriptwriter/co-director between them, but they had roles on stage as a few of the characters. Annie, of course, was our producer, whilst I was the carry-onner and -offer during the play, whilst publicity and marketing officer off-stage.

Anyway, the two threw a brilliant party, with a few games played too, of which, my favourite has to be Chinese charades. Lots of good food, banter and, most importantly, fun. Plus I won a couple of games of pool!

Anyway, thanks to our hosts for a very enjoyable evening! Reminded me of a few APS events, only better and more civilised! (Most people there were PhD students.) Well done girls, and hope to see you both soon.

* HOLIDAY ENDS – BACK TO WORK *

Well, the holiday ends today and I’m back at work tomorrow, with the first task of giving a training session to some of the fantastic new recruits at L.E.K. Ah, but Christmas is round the corner ;-)
