43rd Golden Horse Awards

The 43rd Golden Horse Awards, dubbed as the "Chinese Oscars", took place this weekend in Taipei, Taiwan, and no surprises (for me, at least) that musical film, Perhaps Love took home the most biggest gongs, with a best director award for Peter Chan and best actress award of the delectable Zhou Xun. In addition, it took away the best cinematography award for Peter Pau and best song for Chris Shum and Peter Ko for the song Crossroads, sang by leads Takeshi Kaneshiro and Zhou Xun.

After This Our Exile also won many, with Aaron Kwok picking up his second award for best actor in succession for his portrayal of a failing father. It also won best supporting actor for young co-star Ian Iskandar Goum, who plays Kwok’s son in the film, and best feature film. Meanwhile, big budget film, The Banquet, starring Zhang Ziyi and Zhou Xun (again), could only pick up two awards for best art direction and best makeup and costume design for Tim Yip, demonstrating the disappointment of the impact of that film.

But all in all, the key plaudits went to Perhaps Love which thoroughly deserves its winnings, particularly as it is such a fabulous musical film.
