XDA Hint

As a regular reader of and occasional contributer to Mac OS X Hints, I’ve found the occasional tidbit that has helped me enormously in using my Mac more efficiently (not that it wasn’t more efficient than a PC already!).

Anyway, having not yet found a similar site yet for my Pocket PC XDA IIi, but having spotted a solution to a very difficult problem, I’m going to post a hint here in case anyone comes across the same problem.

My particular problem was transferring my contact list and calendar from my Palm Desktop to Outlook on my work PC. Palm and Microsoft haven’t developed a standard way for transfers either way, and the only ways I found were to export into text (and lose categorisation), beam it across using vCards / vCal (not sensible if you have hundreds of contacts/diary entries), or to buy third party software costing $30 – not worth it if I’m only using it once.

Then I stumbled upon Yahoo! Calendar. If you already have a Yahoo! Mail account, then you will find it on one of your tabs in Yahoo! Mail! Those that don’t just have to sign up for free. Then in Yahoo! Calendar click on sync and you can download Intellisync, which allows you to sync your contacts and calendar from Outlook or Palm Desktop to Yahoo! and vice versa.

Alternatively, clicking on ‘Options’ then Import/Export will allow you to import or export your Yahoo! Calendar into Palm Desktop or Outlook formats.

And what’s more, it’s all free! Sadly, though, I don’t think there is a Mac version and this is for Windows PCs only.

Hope this helps someone out there and save a lot of searching!
