No one can not have spotted the trend for Chinese and Japanese character tattoos appearing in western culture, all the way back to a Spice Girl’s girl power tattoo.
But as I’m learning Mandarin Chinese and the associated characters at the moment, I know one has to be careful as each character might have a sinister meaning in particular contexts.
Sinister or not, when getting a tattoo based on Chinese characters, it’s advisable to get someone to check that the tattooist isn’t going to make a mistake, or worse, even trick you. For the rest of us, we can laugh at some of those "mistakes" at Hanzi Smatter.
