The 26th Hong Kong Film Awards took place over the weekend, and as I try to keep up with my large pile of DVDs, I some indications of what to watch next were pointed out by some of the awards.
Overwhelmingly, Patrick Tam’s film, After This Our Exile was the big winner of the weekend, taking five awards including Best Film and Best Director, but not Best Actor for the hotly tipped lead Aaron Kwok in what was a comeback for him. Young eight year old star, Gouw Ian Iskanda, took Best Supporting Actor and Best Newcomer, obviously with added cute factor.
In a small surprise, Lau Ching Wan picked up Best Actor for his role in My Name Is Fame, ironically, about a washed up actor who has been snubbed by the Hong Kong Film Awards. Lau himself hadn’t won an HKFA award in his 24 year career up to this weekend, and not surprisingly for this lovable actor, the reception was very warm from the audience.
Meanwhile, Gong Li picked up Best Actress for her performance in Curse Of The Golden Flower (review coming as I’m half way through writing it!), which also won best soundtrack for talented actor/singer/songwriter Jay Chou’s The Chrysanthemum Terrace, Best Art Direction and Best Costume.
But as I go off and see for myself how good these flms are, I’ll leave the full review to the Internet’s expert of the Hong Kong entertainment scene, Hong Kong Entertainment In Review’s Sanney Leung.
