In Hong Kong again

It’s becoming something of a frequent, albeit irregular, thing. I’m back in Hong Kong again for a few days to catch up with friends. At the moment, I’m staying with Rui and Charles (combined, they do sound like a famous soul singer), in the flat up in Mid-Levels not quite looking over the harbour (too many other buildings in the way), but a big hill just outside, which has been topped by a large cloud. I’m not sure this is absolutely the right place (it may have been another flat), but my hosts’ cat once committed suicide by jumping out the window. We’re 36 floors up. Can’t have been good if it jumped out of here

It’s almost sunrise – not much to see though as the clouds have stopped that. It’s monsoon season, and whilst the rains aren’t falling, the clouds are having their way for the moment.

But opening the window, you can hear the buzz of the place beginning to stir at 6am in the morning. The birds are singing, the smell of the city is rising. It may not be the ‘fragrant harbour’ that this city’s name used to describe, but there is still an unmistakable smell about Hong Kong that is not all unpleasant.

I’m looking forward to my three days here, before moving onto Shenzhen and Shanghai. In a city that buzzes and amazes, whilst I could never live here, it’s always been nice to pay a visit to the place. Will explore more later.
