Malaysia - VIth Commonwealth Games

(7th - 18th September 1998)

INTRODUCTION

Three years after my last visit to Malaysia, much has changed. Gone were the times of the booming economy - Malaysia was one of the Asian tiger economies, but with George Soros and the devaluation of the economy, Malaysia was in some trouble.

My brother, mother and I arrived on Malaysian Airlines flight 073 from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur International Airport after a three and a half-hour flight. We had flown from one new airport to another, both I am told designed by the same person. KLIA was built on the dream from a Malaysian economy that was the envy of SE Asia, but since then it has depleted valuable resources.

Much had been said about the Commonwealth Games also. It was again a dream that started when they were awarded the games in 1992. That was a long time before these troubles. Since then, the planning of the Games had run into trouble. More of that later.

But we had returned to Malaysia for several reasons. Firstly, because my mother is Malaysian and it was another opportunity to meet family. Secondly, it was the Commonwealth Games. And also we were in HK so a stopover in Malaysia was always on the cards.

So with all that in mind we had the greatest opportunity to enjoy ourselves.
